This
project, recently completed, is a collaboration with poet Robyn
Holloway. We are calling in a “poem
novel.”
The poems that form the book extend from a
narrative sequence, which becomes the impetus for a conversation between a
woman and herself: Rabbit Woman, the interior, and Cassandra, the exterior
woman. The audience hears Cassandra
narrate her own story as Rabbit Woman struggles to redirect Cassandra's
self-destructive energy. Ultimately,
the two characters are locked in a dialogue that explores how these women
share two different sides of the same skin.
Cassandra is not a split-personality character; she is a woman who
finds herself unable to resolve the difference between the woman she thinks
she is and the woman she thinks she would rather be, and neither choice is
completely satisfactory.
